"The role of the Disclosure and Barring Service is to reduce the risk of abuse by ensuring that those who are unsuitable are not able to work with children and vulnerable adults"
The Home Secretary
As a registered body, Acorn Direct is one of the key contact points for checking disclosure applications and validating information provided by applicants. This involves establishing the identity of the applicant, submitting a correctly completed application form and countersigning the application form to confirm an applicant's entitlement. Though the DBS administer the overall process and carry out the confidential checking part of the service, as well as managing and assuring the registered body network, Acorn Direct provide an invaluable checking service which can make the application process much less hassle.
Established under Part V of the Police Act 1997, the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) was launched in March 2002 as an executive agency of the Home Office that provides wider access to criminal record information through its checking service. They enable organisations in the public, private and voluntary sectors to make safer recruitment decisions by providing criminal record information and identifying candidates who may be unsuitable for particular roles; particularly those roles that involve children or vulnerable adults.
